 When cracks are evident in asphalt water will penetrate the topcoat into the sub base, and begin  to erode the foundation. This will eventually lead to potholes or sunken spots, and during the  winter months water will freeze which will cause heaving. Vegetation will also grow from these  cracks, the roots from these weeds will also weaken your sub base. Cracks left untreated in your  asphalt will greatly shorten the lifespan of your driveway/parking lot.
